Smith
Mary (she/her/hers) is a Professional Counselor with a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As an Interpersonal Process Therapist, Mary fosters a genuine, collaborative relationship with her clients in order to provide transformative emotional experiences in session that can be generalized to further change in their lives. Her eclectic approach allows her to respond precisely to each client’s unique needs in the moment. She incorporates techniques from interpersonal process therapy (IPP), cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), gestalt therapy, narrative therapy, polyvagal theory and mindfulness.
Mary is LGBTQ+ affirming and welcomes clients contending with a variety of life challenges including trauma, stress, inertia, perfectionism, interpersonal conflicts, depression, anxiety, and grief or loss. She is skilled at helping clients through their process of self-discovery and self-acceptance. She believes all clients seeking treatment are deserving of compassion and are capable of creating more satisfying lives.
Education and Training
Mary received her undergraduate degree (BA) in Communication Arts-Film from UW-Madison and her graduate degree (MS) in Counseling Psychology from UW-Madison. She has completed extensive DBT training (2 years teaching DBT skills training groups) and is polyvagal certified. She has also been privileged to participate in several multi-cultural volunteer experiences.
